Home Sanitation During the COVID-19 Crisis

Home sanitation is now important than ever. While you should always keep your home clean and sanitized, this is especially true now during the global Corona virus pandemic. Staying on top of home sanitation during this time is of paramount importance. It is not only essential to keep yourself and your cohabitants healthy, but also to keep the general population healthy by curbing the spread and facilitation of the virus.

Why Should You Sanitize Your Home?

You should be sanitizing your home more frequently during the pandemic era. This type of cleaning means sanitizing high-touch spots areas. The areas that come into contact with hands multiple times a day—at least once a day, as well as doing a whole-house sanitation every 2-3 days.

You might be wondering, why? Surely if we are self-isolating or practicing social distancing, then the virus will not enter our home?

Unfortunately, every time you leave the house, you are at risk of contracting the virus. It spreads incredibly quickly and easily, and it’s effortless for carriers to have the virus without even realizing it as they may display no symptoms. As it’s unlikely that you’re staying inside your house 24/7—most people need to get out to at least get groceries once a week—this means that every time you re-enter your house, you are at risk of bringing the virus into your home. Regular home sanitation is a crucial precaution to prevent you and your cohabitants from contracting the virus, which in turn prevents you from passing it onto other people and curbs the spread of the virus. It may seem a little overkill, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

How Should I Sanitize My Home?

You may clean your surfaces regularly, but bear in mind that there is a distinct difference between cleaning and sanitizing. While cleaning removes the number of items that germs can cling onto, sanitizing kills the viruses to prevent them from infecting anyone.

The other thing to remember is that you ought to sanitize more areas, more frequently than you usually would. Here are some tips on how to keep your home sanitized:

Products

First off, you should be using products that are sanitizing—not simply antibacterial. It’s important to remember that bacteria and viruses are different types of microbes, and therefore some cleaners won’t necessarily kill the COVID-19 virus even though they claim to be antibacterial. Check to ensure that you are using reliable products that kill up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses.

Surfaces

All flat, hard surfaces: kitchen counters, tables, and the like ought to be sanitized at least once a day. Use a microfiber cloth and strong sanitizing spray to wipe them down, and ensure that you wipe down the entire area, including underneath any appliances.

Bathrooms

Make sure to sanitize all surfaces in your bathroom, particularly high-touch areas such as faucets and cabinet handles, as well as the sink at least once a day. It also wouldn’t hurt to clean the toilet every few days, simply because they are also touched relatively frequently with dirty hands.

Handles

All door handles, cabinet handles, drawer handles, and any other form of handle or high-touch area ought to be sanitized at least twice a day. These are the areas that are touched most frequently coming in and out of rooms all day, every day. These are often touched with unclean hands, meaning they are significant sources of germ harboring. As Corona virus is spread through droplets from coughs/sneezes that we often carry on our hands, these areas are of utmost importance to keep sanitized to curb the spread of the virus.

Floors

While you may think that you don’t touch the floor often, this step is particularly crucial for those with small children who are in constant contact with the floor and are also more susceptible to contracting the virus. Droplets from coughs/sneezes often end up on the floor and are often left as floors don’t get cleaned as regularly as work surfaces. For hard floors, you should use a strong sanitizing solution—or at the very least, dish soap—mixed with water to give them a vigorous clean every two days. For soft flooring such as carpet, hoovering it around twice a week should be enough to keep it clean and prevent dust build-up—which could harbor—germs, as dust is mostly comprised of skin cells. Don’t forget to clean all floors, soft or hard, in all areas of the house, even those that you think aren’t likely to carry the virus as they’re rarely used. Germs spread very quickly within a home, so it’s crucial to clean the entire house, even though you may consider much of it to be low-touch areas.

Deliveries and Shopping

Another thing to consider is what you’re bringing into the home. If you’re getting deliveries or buying groceries yourself, each item has the potential to carry the virus as somebody outside your home has touched them before entering the house. Try to select contact-less delivery where possible to avoid coming into contact with couriers, and always wear gloves when handling boxes that have been delivered. You can sanitize deliveries and groceries with disinfectant wipes  or spray before bringing them inside, to prevent the possibility of the virus entering the home.
